They found that of 1,539 patients, 221 had MDR tuberculosis, and 53 of these had XDR tuberculosis. The prevalence rates in a heap of 475 patients with confirmed tuberculosis were 39% for MDR and 6% appropriate for XDR tuberculosis–higher rates than previously reported in the range. All patients with XDR disease who were tested fitted HIV were co-infected with the virus, and all but one died.

TAC has encouraged the South African government to provide access to antiretroviral drugs for HIV-positive people in the country. Rath and his foundation have filed a response to TAC’s request, saying that the foundation’s claims about antiretrovirals are true and their criticism of TAC is allowed under the constitutional right to free expression, according to the Cape Argus.
